We all know that brushing is a basic necessity for maintaining a healthy smile. But do we know the proper technique? Ineffective brushing is a waste of time, and sometimes we can let our habit deteriorate. Unfortunately, this leads to deteriorating teeth! Here are some things to remember as you brush up on your brushing habit.
First, brush for two minutes, twice a day, no exceptions. If you have a hard time spending that much time on your teeth, try setting a timer or playing a favorite song. That will help the two minutes fly by.
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Far from being helpful, hard bristles actually do damage to tooth enamel and gums. Make sure to use an ADA approved toothbrush to ensure you are getting a quality product. The ADA Seal of Acceptance comes from the American Dental Association, and indicates that the product has passed rigorous tests for safety and effectiveness.
Use short, back-and-forth strokes and gentle pressure. Pressing too hard can damage the tooth enamel and injure your gums. Be sure you are using a clean toothbrush, and replace the brush every 3-4 months–sooner, if it appears frayed or worn.
